Hi! I'm Emily of British Girl Bakes and I'm going to show you step by step how to create
0:05
this stunning cake using basic cake decorating tools and a simple carving tool. Start with pink
0:11
watercolour frosting by mixing buttercream with pink gel colour, using different amounts of colour
0:16
in different bowls to get different shades and spread random patches of the different
0:21
shades onto your cake using an offset spatula. Smooth the frosting with a frosting smoother
0:27
and touch up any gaps in the frosting with more buttercream, paying attention to the top edge of
0:32
the cake so that there won't be any air pockets there later on. Smooth again and then tidy up
0:37
the top edge but don't worry about what the top of the cake looks like because we're going to cover
0:41
it up in the next step. Chill the cake in the fridge for at least an hour to set this frosting
0:48
and then apply a final coat of buttercream and I used sky blue buttercream for mine
0:53
When you're happy with the finished frosting, chill the cake in the fridge again for at least another
0:58
hour or you can leave it overnight. Draw a heart onto parchment paper and cut it out and this is
1:05
going to be your template to trace around onto the cake in a minute. Take your chilled cake out of
1:10
the fridge and assess it for any imperfections. If there are any small dents or air pockets
1:15
you can carve those out of the cake so just press the template over those areas
1:20
but for anything bigger, for example this seam in the frosting, it's best to put that at the back
1:26
of your cake so spin the cake around and press the heart template to the other side of the cake
1:31
which will be the front. Use a toothpick or a sharp knife to trace around the heart
1:38
scoring the buttercream so that you have an outline for your carving. If you're enjoying this tutorial please click the thumbs up button and subscribe to my channel for

a new cake decorating tutorial every week! Peel the parchment off and don't worry if the warmth
1:52
of your hand has made some smudges in the frosting within the heart because we're going to carve off
1:56
that buttercream anyway. Now dip your carving tool into a cup or bowl of hot water, dry it off on a
2:03
paper towel and use it to gently scrape the buttercream off within the heart shape. You can
2:09
buy these carving tools very cheaply on Amazon and I've put the link for the set I use in the
2:13
description below this video. Before each incision you make into the cake, dip your tool into hot
2:19
water and dry it off on a paper towel so that it doesn't drag scraped off buttercream back onto the
2:25
cake. It's important that the tool stays hot from the temperature of the water so that it makes nice
2:31
clean incisions into the frosting on the cake. If your water cools down, throw it out and refill the
2:37
bowl with more hot water. This is one of the 18 cakes I teach how to decorate in my online course
2:44
on buttercream carving where I go through several carving techniques to create patterns, borders
2:49
images, textures, carved shapes, themed cakes and more and I've put the link for that course in the top
2:56
of the screen and in the description below this video. As you scrape, pay attention to the depth
3:01
of your incisions so that the heart shape will have a flat surface. This is easier than it sounds
3:07
because the pink frosting will be harder than the blue frosting because it's been in the fridge for
3:11
longer so you'll notice a difference in the resistance to your tool as you carve through
3:16
the blue frosting and hit the pink frosting underneath. When you've carved out your heart
3:21
shape you can use a damp paintbrush to brush around the outline to smooth it out and tidy it up
3:27
Make sure the paintbrush is damp. Don't use a wet one because it can cause the colours in the
3:32
buttercream to run and stain the cake and don't use a dry one either because the bristles are
3:37
too sharp when they're dry and they can indent the frosting instead of smoothing it. Next we're
3:42
going to chill the cake again for a few minutes to set the outline of the heart, maybe 15 minutes
3:49
Now dip a paintbrush in edible gold paint to decorate the outline of the heart
3:53
This is a pre-mixed gold paint and you can see that it's a bit watery. It doesn't provide a
3:58
strong gold colour and it's starting to drip down the cake so I'm going to make my own instead
4:04
To do this just mix gold luster dust with a splash of vodka or you can use lemon extract
4:09
and this will make a nice thick paint, almost a paste, with a bolder metallic colour. You can see
4:16
the difference between the two gold paints and my homemade version is definitely more eye-catching
4:21
Don't worry about neatly outlining the heart. Dabbing around the edge gives it a nice border
4:26
without having to be very precise. This cake is a bit more time-consuming to decorate than most
4:32
because of a few rounds of chilling it in the fridge but the techniques to create it are simple
4:36
and I think the result is so impressive that it's worth the time. And there it is! A stunning
4:43
attention-grabbing design perfect for Valentine's Day. Thanks for watching! Remember to click the
